As a Sturt SES volunteer, there are a variety of career paths that you can take. We will discuss with you your intentions and determine if either an operational or non-operational position best suits you.

Non-Operational Roles

Volunteering with the SES doesn’t need to involve mud, dirt, heat, cold, rain and sweat.  In fact, successfully running a SES unit for our community is a significant undertaking that involves much more than trucks, helmets, lights and ladders. Critical roles involving finance, media, incident management and community education provide essential assistance to Sturt SES on an ongoing basis.

These roles are generally non-physical, can be designed to fit into any work/life commitment, are essential to the success of Sturt SES as a whole, and provide a rewarding experience for those who want to contribute but don’t see themselves as ‘lights and sirens’ types.

To deliver and maintain our 24/7 emergency response for our community, the Sturt SES Operations and Support Team utilises volunteers to assist with:

  • Administration: Data entry, document development, recordkeeping, finances
  • Communications: Media/public information, radio operations, scribing and note-taking
  • Information Management:  Digital and paper information management, IT management
  • Incident Management:  Logistics, crew welfare, incident prioritisation, crew dispatch
  • Community Engagement:  Fundraising, public outreach and education
